As more powerful expansion cards are launched each year, The need for increased PCIe bandwidth is ever rising. PCIe 4.0 has been a reliable backbone for these technologies since its introduction in 2017.
In 2019, PCIe 5.0 was released, the latest standard to date. Despite this release being a few years ago now, Hardware manufacturers are only just beginning to catch up, with compatible motherboards and other devices only really becoming available at the end of last year.
So, when you can get your hands on this new technology, what should you expect? And more importantly, do you need to upgrade from your PCIe 4.0? Let’s take a dive into the details.
PCle 5.0 Vs PCle 4.0 – Key Differences
PCIe is what connects PC components to your desktop. Generally, if you were to buy a new PC last year, or even this year, they would likely support PCIe 4.0. PCIe 5.0 is likely to see widespread adoption alongside Intel’s 12th Generation Alder Lake CPUs later this year.
PCIe 5.0 is building on the PCIe 4.0 standard, with the bandwidth being doubled. 128 GB/s bandwidth in an x16 configuration- impressive indeed.
Do You Need To Upgrade?
It is not possible to upgrade an existing PC but it is a consideration that you should make when purchasing a new motherboard. Are you planning to use multiple High power GPUs or High speed PCIe storage cards? If so, making sure that your new build supports PCie 5.0 would be a good idea.
Some may be hesitant to switch because while PCIe 5.0 boasts much faster speeds, there is a higher chance for signal loss. However, this new standard has been built with a greater capability to handle noise and signal loss than before, you can feel safe knowing that PCIe 5.0 has been designed to preserve data integrity.
