Yes AMD. G2’s 7000 Series Threadripper products tested!

G2 Digital has now tested the full range of Threadripper and Threadripper PRO processors and verified them suitable for use in our 2U, 3U and 4U rackmount products.

We recently went over the lineup in a pair of articles. Threadripper Pro 7000WX-Series Vs 7000 Series – What’s the Difference? covered the differences between the two chip ranges. TRX50 Vs WRX90 – Choosing the right platform covered both compatible chipsets.

Full performance without thermal throttling is available even on the space sensitive 2U platform. Available to purchase now our base builds are; 2U Plus RT780X, 3U PC RTV780X, 3U PC RTH780X, 4U Nano RT780X, 4U PC RT780X. All of our builds can be customised with any of the processors. Why did we want to test?

Every new processor range, we assume, offers faster data processing but the question is how much and at what cost. A common drawback is an increase in temperature which in our compact cases can cause issues. So, we set out on our own testing programme to identify what the truths are.

We started with some common benchmark applications that customers frequently refer to when trying to assess the performance benefits of upgrading hardware. These were:

Cinebench is a CPU-based rendering benchmark for optimizing 3D render times. It measures CPU performance by rendering a scene using all CPU threads.

PassMark runs heavy mathematical calculations that stress the CPU’s performance at compression, encryption, and physics-related tasks.

Geekbench is cross-platform utility for benchmarking the central processing unit (CPU) and graphics processing unit (GPU) of computers, laptops, tablets, and phones.

Blender Is an open-source 3D Graphics software toolset commonly used for 3D modelling and related sculpting, rendering. Benchmarks are achieved by rendering a specific job that is available for public use to compare hardware.

The CPUs performed in line with the range positioning and an impressive 55 percent increase in performance for the top-of-the-line model in our Cinebench workload. The non-Pro range in particular offer ridiculous value in workloads that do not need 8 Channel memory or Workstation features like IPMI.

Watch this space for WRX90 based builds available shortly bringing IPMI, High end networking and full 8 Channel memory support.
