When Intel announced last year that it will no longer produce its Next Unit of Computing (NUC) range it did worry some end users that this may be the end of this versatile platform. However, be assured Intel as a technology pioneer had already planned to pass production to its partners who will continue creating the small form factor PCs.
ASUS has been cited as one OEM to take over the NUC lineup and has been granted a “non-exclusive license” to Intel’s NUC designs, but this also leaves the door open to other companies to pick-up production too.
Not only does this secure the future of the NUC but will undoubtedly act as a stepping stone to innovation. Competition breeds evolution and OEM’s like ASUS can add their own features to the product. Perhaps we’re starting to see this already with ASUS announcing the ROG NUC mini gaming PC and ASUS NUC 14 Pro at CES 2024. These feature 14th generation, “Meteor Lake” processors. In systems that while ASUS design, follow Intel’s historical (4”x4”) layout. In the meantime, ASUS continues to sell, and support current Intel NUC systems using 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th generation Intel processors.
From January 16, 2024, all technical support will be provided by ASUS. At the same time all software, firmware, BIOS support, and security advisories will move to ASUS. It is not clear whether NUC-branded designs will totally replace ASUS’ current mini-PC range or if the company will continue to develop, sell, and support two different lineups.
